enough background material to refresh and reinforce earlier courses in corporate finance
and enough advanced material to stimulate the most advanced learner. The predominant
strengths of clarity, current coverage, and friendliness to learner and instructors
continues in this new edition. Some of the areas where coverage has been expanded include
corporate governance and reform, valuation, value based management, cash flow, and newly
updated material on real options. The instructor''s resources enable outstanding
presentations and learning.
Benefits
- Integration of Spreadsheets
and Web-Based Data. With this in mind, we created an Excel spreadsheet, called a "Tool
Kits" for each chapter to show how the calculations required in the chapter were done.
- Web Safaris, Word documents
that begin with a description of the data needed to solve a problem, such as comparing a
company's ratios with industry averages, has a hyperlink to the Web site, taking the
user step-by-step through the site to the desired data.
- End of Chapter Cyberproblems
require students to find and apply information from the Internet to end-of-chapter
materials
- Beta Calculations. Chapter 2
now shows how to use monthly data to calculate beta for Wal-Mart. The calculation is
discussed in the chapter, and the Tool Kit uses Excel to estimate the beta. Two Web Safari
examples obtain the returns and published betas.
- Beyond the CAPM. We
broadened the coverage of the second risk and return chapter to include asset-pricing
models that go beyond the CAPM. In particular, we added a detailed description of the
Fama-French 3-Factor Model, plus a brief introduction to behavioral finance.
- Reorganization of
Forecasting, the Cost of Capital, and the Corporate Value Model so readers now go
seamlessly from historical statements and ratios to forecasts of these items and the cost
of capital and the corporate value model. Corporate governance is included in the
corporate valuation chapter.
- The Hamada Model moved into
Chapter 14. We improved the discussion of how capital structure decisions tie in with the
corporate value model, and of how the equilibrium price is determined when shares are
priced in an IPO or repurchase to change the capital structure.
- Initial Public Offerings
(IPOs) have recently been one of the most exciting areas of finance, especially for people
with an entrepreneurial bent, so we expanded and improved our coverage of investment
banking in general and of IPOs in particular.
- End-of-chapter Spreadsheet
Problems in most chapters have two types of spreadsheet problems - "Build a
Model" and "What If Analysis".
- Beginning-of-chapter
questions, each with its own Excel model. These questions can be used by students to see
the key points covered in the chapters and by instructors as the basis for
discussion-based lectures.
- Discussions throughout the
book about the accounting and corporate scandals, their implications for finance, and what
is being done about the problems.
