The purpose of this book is
to draw together research findings relating psychology to various aspects of the patients'
interaction with the health care system and health care providers.
A particular feature of the book is that chapters are ordered sequentially to reflect both
the patient and health care providers' passage through the health care system. Initial
chapters deal with explanations for health and health behaviour, preventive health actions
and people's ideas about health and illness. Chapters from the middle section of the book
cover topics dealing with use of health care services, interaction between health care
providers and patients, and adherence to treatment advice. Subsequent chapters cover

Robert J Edelmann graduated
from Birkbeck College, London, where he obtained his PhD in Psychology, and trained in
clinical psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, London. He has worked as a lecturer in
Psychology at Sheffield University and was a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in
Clinical Psychology at the University of Surrey where, for a number of years, he was
director of an MSc in Health Psychology. He was also Honorary Secretary of the British
Psychological Society Special Group in Health Psychology at the time of its move to
Divisional status. Most recently, he has held an appointment as Research Professor in the
School of Psychology and Counselling at the Roehampton Institute in London where he is
currently a Visiting Professor. He is a Chartered Clinical, Forensic and Health
Psychologist currently working in private practice with the Psychologists at Law Group and
Powell Campbell Edelmann.
