For use as a supplement to a principles of accounting course, college accounting course, or any accounting course requiring introductory work with spreadsheets. May also be used for the one-semester computerized accounting course when the instructor wants to expose students to several different types of software.

This project was developed to teach students basic spreadsheet skills they will need in the business world. When students begin a job the first piece of software they will work with is not a commercial package (Peachtree, QuickBooks) but a spreadsheet program.

  • Provides detailed instructions for using MS Excel 97.

    • 97 is a very recent release of Excel and the instructions are sufficient for other older releases as well.

  • Chapter 6 provides a simple, straightforward discussion of creating charts and graphs, including the use of the Chart Wizard.

    • Many students find creating charts and graphs difficult. The simple and clear instructions show them how easy the process can be.

  • Over 80 exercises covering all basic accounting concepts.

    • Allows students multiple opportunities to practice the skills they learn in each chapter.

  • Half of the exercises are duplicated from Horngren/Harrison/Bamber, Accounting 4/e.

    • Students can complete the problem manually or complete the same problem at home or in the lab using Excel.

  • Includes solutions for half of the odd-numbered exercises.

    • Allows students to use the book for self-study.

  • The student data disk in the book contains examples for how to set up the following items: general ledger, basic income statement, five types of graphs, C-V-P analysis with a graph, financial ratios, economic demand and supply analysis, microeconomic analysis of profit-maximizing equilibrium, and using a macro to sort a range of data.

    • Students can look at these sample files for guidance before tackling similar exercises in the book.

  • Updates, example files, and other helpful information can be found at the web site that accompanies the book (http://www.IOL19.com/murphy/excel)
