The collection of studies presented in this book tackles the subject of civilization
competences of individuals and sustainable development of local communities. The term
civilization competences was coined by Professor Piotr Sztompka who wrote in 2002:
"Civilization competences are a prerequisite for an individual's participation in
modern civilization and have a determining significance for the success of the societal
learning process."
More than twenty scientific papers prepared by an international research group explain
multi-faced relations between various components of civilization competences such as
income mobility, entrepreneurship, education and culture, using information and
communication infrastructure, gender equality, civil society, social inclusion, awareness
of law, quality of the natural environment.
